Since early September, Beckie Ortiz has cooked homemade meals every Tuesday and given them away free to anyone in Abilene who needs one. She calls the effort Feed Thy Neighbor.

Ortiz said she started because food prices are high and she wanted to do something in her own neighborhood with a skill she loves. People who have picked up meals include single parents and families going through a hard stretch. One man picked up dinner for a neighbor whose house had burned down.

Last Tuesday she made a record 55 meals, about twice her earlier count. She credits donations and sponsorships.

To ask for a meal, volunteer in the kitchen on Tuesdays or donate, send a message to the Feed Thy Neighbor Abilene Facebook page.
