Economy, border and faith: What Abilene early voters said drove their choices

Some voted a straight Republican ticket. One former council member said he looks past party labels.

Abilene voters interviewed during early voting mostly named the same few issues: the economy, border security and their personal values.

One man said he voted for every Republican on the ballot because he wants the country to stay on its current course, and he listed border security and a strong military as priorities. Another voter said her Christian faith guided her, that she relies on a church member's voter guide that cites its sources, and that she doesn't trust campaign ads from either side.

Kyle McAllister, who said he once served on the City Council, wouldn't say who got his vote. He said he wanted a stronger economy, fiscal responsibility and secure borders, and that immigration and secure borders can go together. He said he judges candidates on how they handle money and treat people, not just on their party, and that political disagreements have gotten too personal.

At an Oct. 28 campaign event, other residents named affordability, lower property taxes and protecting Social Security as their top concerns.

These are a handful of voices, not a poll. Results for Taylor County will come from the county elections office after polls close.
