Two free November classes aim to help Abilene residents spot scams
The Better Business Bureau comes to the Main Library on Nov. 10, and Rose Park holds a session for people 55 and older on Nov. 17.
CommunityTwo free classes in November will teach Abilene residents how to recognize scams and what to do if they're targeted.
Scam Prevention 101, presented by the Better Business Bureau, is Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. in the Main Library's community room and is open to adults. BBB staff will go over how scammers build trust and pressure people to act fast, plus how to handle suspicious calls, texts, emails and online offers. The class will also cover what to do and where to report if you've already been scammed.
The Rose Park Senior Center, 2625 S. 7th St., hosts a Scam Alerts class for people 55 and older on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 9 to 10 a.m. in Room C. Happy State Bank is sponsoring it.
The library points to Federal Trade Commission figures: consumers reported losing $3.5 billion to imposter scams in 2025, and adults 60 and older reported $2.4 billion in fraud losses in 2024. Warning signs include contact you didn't expect, requests for money or personal information, pressure to act right away, threats, and odd payment instructions.
