Wylie listening session puts school funding front and center
Texas has the second-largest number of public school students in the U.S. but ranks 47th in per-student spending.
SchoolsWylie ISD hosted a community listening circle this fall on how state policy is affecting local classrooms. The Raise Your Hand Texas Community Leaders Fellowship organized it.
Funding came up most. Participants pointed to rising enrollment and the need for more teachers and resources. Texas has the second-largest public school enrollment in the country but ranks 47th in per-student spending.
Wylie High history teacher Kendall Harrison called public schools the foundation of the community and said they need teachers, parents and neighbors all involved. He said more money per student is needed as enrollment keeps climbing.
School funding has also come up in this year's congressional and legislative races. Participants described it as an issue that can bring people from both parties together.
