Wylie's Pure Gold Band heads to state marching contest for the first time in 10 years
Fourth place at area sent the band to state in its first year in 5A. It also extended its top-rating streak to 40 years.
SchoolsThe Wylie High School Pure Gold Band has qualified for the UIL State Marching Band Contest. It's the band's first trip to state in 10 years and its first since moving up to Class 5A.
The band finished fourth at the UIL Area contest to earn the spot. Earlier in the season it received a first-division rating at the UIL Region contest, its 40th straight year with the top rating.
This year's show, 'The Ashes of Us,' started with 7 a.m. rehearsals in July.
Head Director Kyle McDonald said the move from 4A to 5A is a big jump, but he has believed from the start that the students could compete at that level and that they are only beginning to show what they can do.
Student leaders thanked families, the community and the band staff for their support through the season.
