Abilene railroad crossing work drags on; Sayles Boulevard expected to reopen around year's end
Victoria Street's crossing is closing for good, and nearby businesses say the work is causing dust and risky traffic.
Weather & TrafficRailroad crossing work along North 1st and South 1st streets is still closing roads in Abilene after months of construction. Union Pacific, the city and TxDOT are working on the project together.
Crossings at Victoria Street, North 1st and South 1st have been affected, and the Sayles Boulevard crossing is the latest to close. TxDOT says the work is meant to improve the streets around the tracks. When it's done, the Victoria Street crossing will be closed permanently.
TxDOT expects the Sayles Boulevard crossing to be finished around the end of the year or in early 2027, depending on weather and materials. The Leggett Drive crossing is finished but stays closed while gas line work goes on nearby.
Workers at businesses near the construction say dust has been a problem and that some drivers run the temporary stop signs, making it hard for customers to pull in and back out. If you drive through the area, plan for detours and watch for stopped traffic.
