A grass fire near Interstate 20 caused three homes to be evacuated on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 24, before firefighters contained it, according to the Abilene Fire Department.

Engine 5 and Brush 5 got to the fire near mile marker 292 at 4:31 p.m. It was burning through thick brush and tall grass and moving northwest at a moderate speed, pushed by winds of 16 to 23 mph.

More AFD units came in. The fire was hard to reach, so the Texas A&M Forest Service brought heavy equipment, and the Hamby Volunteer Fire Department helped through mutual aid. Crews put it out directly and with backburns, and had it contained by 8 p.m.
