The rebuild of Cypress Street downtown is one of the finalists for Best Public Improvement in the 2026 Texas Downtown President's Awards, the City of Abilene announced.

The project, finished in early summer 2026, rebuilt the street and sidewalks between North First and North Fifth streets. It switched the street to two-way traffic and added 20-foot sidewalks, decorative lighting, landscaping, seating, bike racks and an outdoor sound system.

The work grew out of the city's 2016 downtown master plan and was paid for through its Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone. The awards drew 155 entries statewide, and winners will be announced Nov. 4 at the Texas Downtown conference in Amarillo.
