Work is underway on a new free public parking lot at the corner of North Second and Pine streets, just east of Cypress Plaza in downtown Abilene.

When it's done, the lot will have roughly 140 free spaces, including accessible spots for drivers with disabilities. The city's latest quarterly report puts the count at 136. The site is being rebuilt and expanded, and the project is expected to stay under construction into 2027.

The work also includes new sidewalks and landscaping. Sidewalks are being redone on the south side of North Second between Cypress and Pine, on the west side of Pine from North Second to the lot entrance, and on the north side of North First from the Cypress Plaza pavilion to the lot entrance.

The city's downtown team lists it as the third of its current downtown construction projects, alongside the Cypress Street and Cypress Plaza work. The city is asking drivers and people on foot to watch for crews and follow posted signs near the site.
