Abilene's Parks & Recreation Board voted Oct. 20 to name the recreation center at Arthur Sears Park the Billy Enriquez Recreation Center, the city said. The park itself keeps its name.

Enriquez, a longtime advocate and leader in Abilene's Hispanic community, was one of four people nominated through the city's naming applications. The others were Ovelia Campos, Sgt. Reuben Marcus Fernandez III and Mark Rogers.

In a second vote, the board named the building's multipurpose room for Campos, a longtime resident, educator and community leader who died in 2021. Under city policy, a naming proposal must pass two board readings, and the board has the final say.
