Free library sessions with Hendrick to cover lung cancer warning signs and screening
The November program continues a health series that has covered heart attacks and strokes, breast cancer and diabetes.
CommunityThe Abilene Public Library and Hendrick Medical Center are holding two free sessions in November on preventing and catching lung cancer early.
Health professionals will cover risk factors and the symptoms worth bringing up with a doctor. Those include a cough that won't go away or gets worse, chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing up blood, weight loss with no explanation and constant fatigue. Other conditions can cause the same symptoms, which is why the organizers recommend getting checked.
The sessions will also explain screening. For people at high risk, the recommended test is a low-dose CT scan, or LDCT.
The library says the sessions are meant for smokers and former smokers, people worried about their lungs, and anyone helping a family member. Earlier programs in the series covered heart attacks and strokes, breast cancer and diabetes. Times are posted at abilenetx.gov/apl.
